Old Melbourne Gaol

The Old Melbourne Gaol is a fantastic example of Melbourne’s evolution. Built back in the 1800’s, Melbourne’s Gaol was built to house the criminals of the day.

As there are no longer any residents, Victoria Discovers was able to walk through what is now a museum to the ‘badens’ of yesteryear.

Wander freely around some of the old cells.

Whilst seeing some of the old torture and discipline devices aimed to keep troublemakers in line.

Though the Gaols most infamous former resident is of course the notorious outlaw Mr Ned Kelly.

His old armour is now housed on public display at the Melbourne Museum. However, replicas are available to try on.

Make sure to check out his death mask.

Before checking out where he delivered his famous last words.

“Such is Life”…
