Victoria Discovers were invited to the Melbourne premiere of Billy Elliot The Musical. Based on the 2000 film, Billy Elliot is set in 1980’s Durham, England in the midst of the miners strikes under the Thatcher government. Amongst all of the poverty and protests, a 12 year old miners son battles an internal struggle to follow his passion. He must find the strengh to cast aside his family’s boxing roots and rise up to be the dancer he is destined to become. All to the incredible score written by the one and only Elton John.
There are currently 4 young boys playing the role of Billy in Melbourne. Omar Abiad, River Mardesic, Wade Neilsen and Jamie Rogers on a rotational order. Victoria Discovers were honored to see the the role of Billy performed by Melbourne’s very own River Mardesic.
River Mardesic, who is currently training at The Dance Company in Melbourne, made his professional debut and what a performance he gave!!!!!
Mardesic’s agility, ability and shear passion brought ‘Electricity’ to the role of Billy, leaving the audience astonished by his outstanding performance. Finishing with a richly deserved standing ovation.
Victoria Discovers would like to point out that Billy Elliot does contain strong language throughout so may not be suitable for young children.
This heart warming, community inspired, feel good musical is only in Melbourne for 6 very short weeks and will be leaving the Regent Theatre on 19 April. Victoria Discovers would strongly recommend booking tickets early to avoid disappointment.
